I have always been captivated by wild places. Growing up roaming through Northern California’s towering redwood groves and rocky coastlines, my deep love and respect for the outdoors was only surpassed by my passion for horses.

I craved adventure from an early age. Feeling compelled to document the places I explored, I was drawn to pen, paper, and my camera’s viewfinder. My high school’s photography darkroom was my refuge, and I was inspired to pursue a life where I could continue to engage with the American West’s wild places on creative and intellectual levels.

After getting a degree in History from Montana State University, that familiar force pulling me outside only became stronger. I began training my buckskin mare to become the trail companion of lifetime, while simultaneously launching my career in education. I learned a lot during my first year of classroom teaching, but I gained even more from the hundreds of miles I spent on horseback.

Exploring far-out places with my equine companions has strengthened my commitment to protecting the landscapes we traverse together. I launched Ride Outside with the goal of connecting horseback riders with other outdoor enthusiasts to promote unity and trail stewardship.

Long-distance riding is more than a passion, it’s how I connect with my animals, myself, and the public land I am so grateful to have access to. No matter how you choose to get out there, I encourage you to roam far, ride free, and enjoy happy trails!
